Drummer – Dave Abbruzzese

Early on in the drummers life

Born in Connecticut in May of 1968 – the young Dave Abbruzzese grew up in Mesquite, Texas and used to play on his dads tackle boxes. He attended North Mesquite High School but dropped out at an early age to really focus on pushing his drumming in the right direction.

Getting into the Texas music scene he performed with a few bands including Segueway, Flaming Hemorrhoids and Course of Empire. Influenced by drummers such as John Bonham and Chad Smith he also starting his own band called Dr Tongue and played in the Dallas and Denton areas.

Hooking up with Pearl Jam

After receiving a phone call from friend and fellow drummer Matt Chamberlain, Dave travelled to Seattle in 1991 to meet up with the band Pearl Jam whom Matt was about to leave having his eyes on G.E. Smiths band on Saturday Night Live.

Dave played his first show with Pearl Jam on 23rd August 1991 and toured the ‘Ten’ album, playing on MTV Unplugged and Saturday Night Live.

Dave helped to record the bands second studio album ‘Vs’ which set the record, at the time, for the most album copies sold in a week and was later to be nominated by for a Grammy Award for ‘Best Rock Album’.

He played on the bands third studio album ‘Vitalogy’ but was fired in August of 1994 before the albums release, apparently for a ‘clash of personalities’ with the band members.

 

Using mainly Ludwig drums pre Pearl Jam Dave got an endorsement with Drum Workshop at the time of recording the vs album, he also plays Sabian Cymbals, Brady Snare Drums and Pro-Mark Sticks!

in September of 1997 Dave formed his own band called ‘The Green Romance Orchestra’ where he was also took on the role of producer. Later on he played with HairyApesBMX mixing and producing their album ‘Out Demons’ recorded in 2000.

Dave married Laura Whisman in September of 2006 and currently lives in Dallas, Texas.
